La musica sacra come incentivo morale
Come ho molte volte detto, pensare che la musica sia neutra è un errore enorme, un errore che purtroppo trova oggi accoglienza anche nella forma di musica più alta, quella che si rivolge a Dio. Pensare che ogni musica va bene per le celebrazioni liturgiche è non solo sbagliato, ma anche deleterio. La musica influenza la nostra moralità, in un senso o nell’altro.
In un bel libro di Oswald Siren, The Chinese on the Art of Painting, viene riportato un testo di Ts’ao Chih (192-232) in cui si fa un riferimento al significato morale della pittura che noi potremmo anche applicare alla musica sacra: “Quando si vedono le immagini dei Tre Re e dei Cinque Imperatori, non si può fare a meno di guardarli con rispetto e venerazione, e quando si vedono le immagini dei San Chi (gli ultimi sovrani degradati delle dinastie Hsia, Shan e Chou), non posso non sentirmi triste. Quando si vedono immagini di ribelli e figli non filiali, non si può fare a meno di digrignare i denti. Quando si vedono immagini che rappresentano uomini di alti principi e grandi saggi, non si può non dimenticare i propri pasti. Quando si vedono le immagini di sudditi fedeli morti al richiamo del dovere, non si può che sentirsi esaltati. Quando si vedono le immagini di cittadini in esilio e di figli espulsi, non si può fare a meno di sospirare. Quando si vedono immagini di uomini viziosi e donne gelose, non si può fare a meno di guardare di traverso. Quando si vedono immagini di imperatrici obbedienti e di buone consorti secondarie, non si può non provare la più profonda ammirazione. Da ciò possiamo comprendere che i dipinti servono come esempi morali o come specchi di condotta”. Noi potremmo dire qualcosa di simile in riferimento alla musica sacra, quando ascoltiamo un brano con una musica ben scritta e che promana bellezza non possiamo fare a meno di percepire quell’ordine e quella bellezza che in definitiva ha il suo apice in Dio, quando una musica è veramente spirituale naturalmente ci spinge alla devozione, quando una musica ci parla il linguaggio soprannaturale e non quello della musica di intrattenimento ci sentiamo spinti ad abitare nella casa di Dio.
Eppure ci appare incredibile come coloro che dovrebbero vigilare sulla musica nella liturgia pensino di convertire i cuori dei fedeli con la stessa medicina che in parte li fa ammalare. Purtroppo sembra che non cinsi voglia accorgere di come l’avvelenamento dei pozzi che da qualche decina di anni inquina la sorgente e il culmine della nostra fede produca dei mali enormi nei fedeli, distruggendo in essi ogni senso del soprannaturale.
La musica non è neutra, ogni musica parla per specifiche esigenze: esiste una musica per i militari, una musica per ballare, una musica per incitarene soprattutto deve esistere (ed è sempre esistita) una musica diretta a Dio. Questo è un dato presente in tutte le culture. Ma ce li vedete i monaci Buddisti che intonano i loro mantra sulle melodie di Bollywood? Noi facciamo questo da più di 50 anni.

Praise be to Jesus and Mary! The orchestra people do not pray anymore; they are super-greedy and only seeking fame and fortune. I have NEVER been properly taught my instrument. I realized this while I was playing this morning. None of my teachers truly cared about God, or prayed to God or made God a priority. As a result, I became a puppet for them and I was never properly taught my instrument. They inflated things when I was average. As a result, my playing and person suffered. I am still trying to recover from this. It happens a LOT in the church, even the Latin mass. The organists, the singers and the priests all get SO inflated that I cannot even play in the choir anymore. I just run away.
God will restore the orchestra to new amazing heights. I saw an orchestra that was crazy huge. Hundreds of people in the orchestra, like the procession of Our Lady of Fatima, that big. The people were all HAPPY and no one was trying to be “Better” or richer or more successful than any other musician (seems impossible!). Everyone was caring and ready to help others. There was ALWAYS a chair for anyone who wanted to join this massive orchestra. Even if you didn’t play, or were just a beginner, the conductor would have you doing small jobs but you were on stage; even as just a page-turner or to ring a bell. It was great! No one was left out. And the SOUND of it was stronger and better than what all the orchestras on earth could ever do, because people praised God with the instruments instead of mocking Him or stepping on Him. There were no egos. (crazy!). The best I can say it is like if St. Theresa Little Flower were to create her own orchestra and play in it, all the parts were like her, just people wanting to praise the Lord and serve him in the Orchestra. And it was the biggest in the entire world.

Praise be to Jesus and Mary! Have you considered that the instruments of God are symbols of the Church, the Holy Eucharist, the Sacred Heart, the Passion, the Body of Christ, the Church, Christ Crucified on the Cross, the Pregnant Mother Mary, and so much more when you add into that all the symbolism of the music? The violin, for one example, is like the Sacred Heart or the Two United Hearts of Jesus and Mary as it has four chambers inside; just like a heart, and the strings are like the heart strings and the soundpost like the soul of the body. The violin itself has a scroll like the dead sea scrolls or like the old testament Torah or like the book of revelations; the scrolls being unfurled. The bridge is our gateway to Heaven; the Cross. The bow and violin together form a cross and the bow is the Bow of St. Michael that will help the Blessed Virgin to “stamp out satan’s head with her heel.” The bow when played helps Mary to stamp out Satan. The body of the violin is like the Pregnant Virgin Mary, with Jesus inside making all the music inside her womb; the prayers, etc. The strings are like the harp strings of the Angels in heaven proclaiming “Holy Holy Holy” forever and ever. This is just a small bit of Catholic symbolism of the Violin. The Violin is like the Bread of Life or the Lamb of God, the Eucharist or like the Divine Child as it rests in it’s case (the Manger) and we pick it up and play it (eat it). It is like the Bread of Christ in this way because the sound nourishes our soul and puts our mind up to God’s ways and of Eternity. We ponder the music and see the highest angels in heaven doing strange things; their eyes and wheels and wings, in the complexity of the sound of the bow and the strings and the high and low pitches or complex music passages. We see the Cheraphim and Seraphim in these ways, doing wonderful and secret things. This is just a small section of what makes up the entire orchestra. The conductor is like God the Father, and the orchestra like the Church. The concertmaster could be like the Son, and the baton or the chimes like the Holy Ghost. The orchestra can also represent the saints and angelic choirs. So much Catholic symbolism in the Orchestra, and in music.
